Total Newbie Island?
Saturday, December 13th, 2008So I just deleted a comment that was left for me as a personal note. The person asked for a “total newbie corner”. Basically just how to do the basics. Things like FTP, HTML, CSS, PHP, etc…
My first reaction was…. don’t know how to use Google huh?
My second reaction was… I really don’t mind teaching some of the basics if more of my readers, members, etc.. need it.
So do ya? If I don’t get at least 10 comments asking for it – I won’t do it at all

Well, really Google has plenty of information on all those topics with tutorials, videos, examples and so much more, why would you bother to re-write the same stuff over and over? My suggestion would be for you to just save your time and make one big post with links to appropriate resources on other sites (e.g. php.net, etc) and arrange them in categories.
So, basically, I am against your commenter’s idea.

Keeping a blog updated is a lot of work. I would hate to see you wasting your time teaching newbies how to use CSS when there’s a million freaking websites already dedicated to this. If someone is doesn’t have enough initiative to google it first before asking a question, then they don’t deserve your time. IF they do everything in your 30 day program first, look on forums/tutorial sites for their answer first, and then are still stuck for an answer, they’ve earned the right to ask a question. It may sound a little harsh to some people but it’s true. Someone said the same thing to me on a forum once, and do you know what I did? I worked my ass off trying to educate myself. My vote is to spend your time on intermediate to advanced seo and blackhat seo, which is much harder to find online. CSS and FTP? Google it!!!

That was my first reaction as well Mr. D.
I think I’ve got a bit of a solution – I’ll post it in a few minutes.

Some things I would love to learn:
- How to find valuable affiliate opportunities (so many offers, how to separate’wheat from the chaff’)
- How to track PPC results when doing affiliate campaigns (since you more often than not cannot give your conversion pixel to the merchant)
- How to take data feeds and turn them into a product site
- How to scrape content from the web and insert it into pages in a way that is crawlable

I second Mr. D’s suggestion. Share some things that won’t get you DOS’d but will shine some light on stuff harder to find or less talked about. Maybe some things that scratch the surface enough to get those willing to work a foot in the door.

Sounds like a great idea. I’m in need of the basics, even though I’ve been delving in aff marketing for 6 months.

Your right about being able to google certain info. But – just a thought – the more generalized info you have on your site will give you a better ‘bounce rating’, from the big G since people will stay on your site longer. And the more resources, the more people people will come.
I would like to learn more techniques about staying under the radar.
Also interested in scraping and then being able to tweak and use all that info fairly quickly.
The down side of putting out Grey Hat/Black Hat techniques is that the more people learn and use them – and then some people invariably abuse them – google catches on and improves their SE algorithm.

As much as I would like to know more about most of the acronyms you mentioned, Ed, it’s doubtful the real ‘value’ of Blackhat Digest would change that much for me. I come for the things I am not able to get anywhere else. If I want to study PHP there’s about 15 ebooks sitting on the hard drive. (I really do like the way you explain stuff in everyday terms, however!)
