Newbie Training… 10 comments a must!
Monday, December 15th, 2008Well the other day I posted a request for 10 of you to comment if you wanted us to start teaching some of the newbie stuff (it was a trick question – I’ll explain in a minute). I cheated though because 2.3k people have read that page and I didn’t get 10 responses……. and only one well thought out one.
You see – if you had already followed some of the instructions inside the 30 day guide that means you’ve signed up for Other98percent.com as a free member. Guess what?
I teach CSS and the basics of PHP in there already
It’s free
– PAY ATTENTION!
What I was hoping for was for someone to say hey – Teach me cpanel. Teach me to set up my VPS. Teach me how to scrape some articles. Teach me something beyond the basics….
I’d LOVE to do it. I will do it…. IF…..
10 comments literally asking to learn something. If 10 of you can’t say “I WANT TO LEARN XYZ….” well I won’t be bothered to teach it.
Sound fair?

VPS? Hell yes I’d like a Dummies-type guide to VPS.

Is there some way of automating the scraping of articles with specific keywords in them and then autoposting them onto blogspot blogs with anchor text rich backlinks to my site?

What about some XSS basics? How to detect (and prevent) injects + encoding and all that jazz + some JavaScript (and recommendations) etc. It is good for the noobs also, because then they will learn how to think analytically!

Not that I’m so smart; I haven’t finished the 30 days yet either, but someone had already taught me the point you were trying to make, which as it turns out seems to be a valuable one

Mr D. – You were the “one well thought out comment” on the other thread – so don’t knock yourself

good discussion. With so much information available ‘out there’ just by searching a term, it seems to me it is better to have a trusted source provide it. Since I trust what I read here, it would be very good to have that area of “the basics” to go to and find out the technology that works and why it works, and the theory behind it too.
I have jumped all around trying to learn everything about online business, from SEO to copywriting to setting up a website with xsitepro2, to editing autoinstalled websites and blogs too infrequently for good use. I would like to understand and be able to set up RSS feeds and generate links. I am admitting here that using your terrific auto technology like wordpressimonthly or autoinstalled or sitewidelinking doesn’t work unless I learn the right way to use it.
So, with my mea culpa for not taking enough initiative consistently, I ask for help in “putting it all together” by outlining how to use the memberships and teaching tools that you have set up for us. Is that worthwhile or am I aksing for what you’ve already provided? Just point me there, and I’ll make a better effort to implement as I learn.
Thanks, Ed.

Most newbies would like a simple guide to make some quick cash.
I’m not talking about dummies who expect to make 10k for 2 hours work, I mean those who want to make a small amount of dough, so they have some capital to buy domain names, hosting etc. to carry on to bigger things, like the 30 (18?) day challenge.
People are scared to invest in anything they don’t understand, and would like to see that making money on-line is really possible – before moving onto bigger projects.

I would like to learn about AJAX, it’s uses, and how to use it. I’ve read that it’s a very ‘portable’ and robust platform, but I’ve not been able to find decent tutorials for it. I think it’s going to be used alot in the development, so I’d like to have a handle on how to use it.
Also, as with dfobare, I want to learn more about operating a VPS. I have one, but my knowledge is so limited, I’m afraid to touch anything there, except to create hosting accts., and assign IP’s. I would love to save some money here, as I have to pay extra for someone to ‘manage’ it for me, as I have NO clue how to secure it, restart it, or add on to it.

i’d like to learn more about being hidden and besides the obvious avoiding the footprints i’m sure i leave behind, coding for automating everything and some insights to where to research myself so that I can put some work in without it being given to me. do get me wrong if you wanna tell me the secrets, i’ve got ears that can hear the gravitational pull of the moon but i think a lot of people want things handed to them. i personally don’t mind rtfm.

Is there a way to target local traffic for free? I know I can use Adwords, but I was wondering if there is a way to do “Local SEO”, or any other form of free traffic generation.

I gotta second bowillis. I fear the “footprint” and need more things to look for to keep that at a minimum while still managing to promote everything.
Since we ARE trying to automate as much as possible, I really appreciate your tools. It’s a heckuvalot easier to mix and match to keep the footprints away, than to buy some huge “do-everything” piece of software that looks like I slogged through the swamp.
I’d also like to see some stuff about recurring/membership sites. Like where to get all the freakin’ content!!

“Cheapcalls….” Check out Caffeinated Content (link above
), it can do exactly that (& a lot more).
+1 here for a decent guide to running a VPS or an insiders perspective on running membership sites.

I appreciate all the comments guys/gals. Some of those things are covered already in the 30 day guide – some aren’t.
I’ll be kicking out a VPS guide over the holidays (probably a series of video) and there are a number of other good suggestions there as well.

How do you focus your blog when to get a reasonable amount of traffic you pick 6 to 8 key word phrases in the 3,4,5 words each. If you take the common words you’re into a higher competion niche. Take the phrases indididually and it’s difficult not to have repeditive content.

Another thought: I’d like to learn the basics of managing a LOT of different domains and sites. For example, how can i automate interlinking, so that I wouldn’t have to do it all manually and can use different keywords on every page of the same site without having to manually write all the links?

OK, I don’t know if this counts as an intelligent question, but here goes:
I have heard through the rumor mill that some blackhatters are making serious moolah by exploiting the WP-mu blogs. For those who may not know what these are, they are WordPress multi-user blogs. I did a recent Google search and found approximately 20,000 of these. Each wp-mu allows you to set up your own blog. Apparently these carry some serious backlink weight. Any thoughts?

@mikewvp – Not sure what you mean there. But like everything else you need links to get things going somewhere. Elaborate and I’m sure I or someone else will chime in.
