Forget Captchas – Make em write for you!

March 5th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Rambling

Just had a thought (you know that’s dangerous).  I recently signed up to beta test a service that is paying us to get folks to fill out a captcha – of course that captcha has advertisements in it.  I’m not sure how long something like this will last, but it’s a great way for brands like Coke or Pepsi to brand themselves.

I’m setting it up on some of my main stream sites to make a few more bucks a day – but it got me thinking about how else we could use our visitors and the need for captcha filling to work for us.  Usually I need content even more than I need the dollars :)

You see – we quiz them.  Let’s say that they want to use a service of ours, and/or get a freebie.

Step one:  Ask them to write a short paragraph on Golden Retrievers.

Step two:  Ask them to verify if something someone else wrote appears to be a valid paragraph.

Step three:  Once what they have written is “approved” by someone else they get xyz.

No dang clue if it would work, and what they are getting would have to be pretty good for this to work.  You would probably also get plagarism, etc… but it’s something that you could certainly try.  Mix it in with something viral like forcing a twitter or something and you could fill up a large database with content over time.

Wouldn’t take a whole lot of programming skills either.  Great excuse for you to go learn PHP/MYSQL.

Cult of Personality?

January 6th, 2010 | 1 Comment | Posted in Rambling

Read a review today about a product of some type called “nanoblogger”. Basically an e-book/guide thing on how to make small blogs and interact with social networks.

It got me to thinking though *always dangerous* about how easy it would be to screw this up. Normally when you are making small sites you are making a lot of them and you aren’t leaving much of a “trail” out there. With something like nanoblogging you are though.

You are interacting through social media and trying to maintain many different persona’s. Let’s face it – you are going to screw up.

While this was sitting in the back of my head I started researching a new niche for a mini guide for Noobie2pro folks. I came across a WP blog…. and started laughing my tail end off.

Why?

Well all the posts referred to the author as “steve”. But the sidebar welcomed you to “Richards” blog. His ’self made’ comments were even funnier – kept posting as himself by mistake (ie still logged in as admin) and thanking the wrong person for such an insightful post on the topic. In some cases he was talking about the wrong blog altogether.

I hope it was an automated thing that didn’t actually require him to create the blog manually – because if it was it was a huge stinking waste of time.

My point? If you are pretending to be a reviewer for your blog, or faking a persona to separate a topic from yourself stay consistent.

Slamming into Twitter – it’s fun!

December 19th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Online Tools, Rambling

Well it’s snowing like crazy here and since my monster truck is in the shop I don’t think we will be going anywhere today.  Something about the two foot high drift into the side of the Mini-Van suggests that I should just sit tight today.  Yesterday I ported my twitter slamming script into a script anyone can use and I’m wondering what else you kids would like to see.

The twitter script takes as many twitter accounts, and rss feeds as you want to shove at it and posts at your schedule.  It works for traffic – even if the twitter accounts aren’t really popular.

YOU CAN MAKE THEM POPULAR THOUGH.

I added in the ability for you to add tweets that have nothing to do with your rss feeds and made it gender specific so you can have women tweet girl crap and men be men :)   (Did you see what I did there?)

Anyway, I expect to be snowed in today and tomorrow (first real snow here in years) – so if you have any bright ideas let me know and I just might make it.
