30 Days to a Kick Ass Foundation: Day 4 – Foundation and White Hat Script

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Time to get your “White Hat” on.

Today is all about getting ready. You need something to push all that traffic to as we go along with your other sites and promotional methods and that means you are going to need some white hat sites that can both get you approved for the affiliate programs and pull in some decent traffic with all those links your going to be pointing towards it.

Every “expert” out there has their own opinion on what makes a good “top level” site. Some like straight html, some even use wordpress or xsitepro. Others use database driven sites that change out words and things like that.

I’m not real hip on that to be honest with you. The first few options involve lot’s of writing and I HATE writing. I think I’ll especially hate writing about home improvement.

Chances are you might feel the same way as I do about it. So let’s figure out how to have some nice looking sites that have LOT’S of pages, and LOT’S of unique content.

I want to make a few bucks from these white hat sites pretty fast, so I’ll need a mix of advertising. Some pages might have contextual ads, some might have affiliate ads, and some might be geared up right from the get go to shove some “ebay” love my way… even better I think I’ll use some fancy smantsy programming to do it all at once.

In the mean time if you want (and you do) to get started you need to make at least one “top level” site. If you’ve got some experience you can use anything you want. If you don’t now is a good time to tackle something you’ve never done before. Examples (yes you have to pick something):

WordPress (If you need help please see me in the other98percent.com forum. Send me a private message and I’ll give you a link to sign up for blogsfortraffic.com on me so you have all the tutorials you need. My name there is “admin”.)

Xsitepro site

Straight HTML site.

WordPress MU. Great way to manage things. Just don’t open registration to the public.
Social Network site : Dolphin Script, pligg, etc..

We’ll cover database driven sites down the road. Don’t want to scare you off quite yet :)

So to finish off day 4 I want you to GET SOMETHING UP. It doesn’t have to be perfect but you need something up. I’ll be handing you a script to help you out in a day or so if your a member of Niche Site Special 2 (black hat), but if your not I’ll cover some additional methods to generate some decent sites with the least amount of writing as we go along. The important thing here is you need to get something up on your own. If you KNOW your going to use the scripts I give you, stick it in a subfolder or subdomain.

(don’t know what I’m talking about? Google has a great search feature and there are probably tutorials on youtube. Your host probably does as well).

O.k. If you don’t know how to make a straight html site, use xsitepro, or even install wordpress this is going to be kind of scary because I’m going to make you use an FTP client in a second. If you DO NOT know how to use a FTP client I’ll be glad to show you how but you have to come see me in the forum over at other98percent.com. If you don’t know how to install wordpress or work with it – I’ve got a great training site as well. Come see me in the other98percent.com forum and I’ll be glad to give you access.

It’s a pretty basic template, but it comes complete with an admin area to manage things. To make this a proper “white hat” or top level site you are going to have to add some content. That’s easy to do through the admin interface.

Once you have uploaded the files to your server just go to /admin/manage.php and enter a blank password.

So what does this script do exactly?

The day 4 script has a text file which includes a list of all 50 states. This becomes your main “auto-generated” menu. Each of those states have their own text files, and they contain a list of all the cities from that state. You now have a list of almost all the cities and all states in the United States. ( This type of list usually costs over $100 – but we are giving you this for free right here in this program script)

Your main objective and your main purpose will be to add a few content items, like articles or something that is relevant. If your just doing black hat make a couple “ads”. All added content links to it’s own page, and becomes the sites RSS feed.

If you don’t want to do all 50 states you can edit the states.txt file, and you can also edit each states “city” text files to add new cities or take some out.

You can also add content to individual pages easily as well – change the advertising (adsense by default), and a few other things that are covered in the video.

For my example since I’m doing home improvement ‘stuff’ I’m going to buy a few domains that relate to things like home improvement or things like air purifiers and make a bunch of sub domains on each one. Minimal work, and I’ll be treating these more like my foundation sites than my white hat sites out of the box. I’ll need to do a little tweaking to make a proper ‘white hat’ site out of them.

Since I’m not feeling real hot yet, I’ll get into day 5 tomorrow and I’ll have my “plan” be fully exposed at that point. I’ll be putting more templates into NSS 2 as well so you have more options.

Download the Script and let’s roll.

The way I plan to use the “DAY 4″ script as is more as a foundation site ( a buffer between my white hat sites, and my black hat sites). Lot’s of pages means it’s hard to add content all over the place. Although I’ve built in that functionality I’m smart enough to know I’m not going to do it. If you know you won’t be adding a lot of content to each city just hang tight till day 5. I’ll be showing you how to ‘niche’ the heck out of this Day 4 script to do anything you want – ie promote any topic, and tool, and region, anything. It’s what I’ll be using for many of my ‘white hat’ sites along with wordpress, and some database driven sites.

THE DAY 4 SCRIPT IS GOING TO TAKE “WORK” TO MAKE WHITE HAT – IE SOME ORIGINAL CONTENT. SEE DAY 5 FOR MORE DETAILS ON HOW TO MAKE IT WORK FOR SMALLER NICHES, and SEGMENTS.

  1. The audio in the video is garbled.

  2. Just watched it all the way through – beyond my voice being scratchy the audio seemed fine on this end.

Having a connection problem? Is it choppy? Give a little more info and I’ll see what I can do.

  3. intesting. when I watch it, I hear your voice, but also hear what sounds like the Chipmunks. Unfortunately, the chipmunks are louder. It’s not choppy at all.

Same results on both my computers – a windows xp box and a dell laptop running ubuntu linux.

  4. Had a comment on the forum as well about it not working properly because of an adobe update. Not sure what’s going on – but I’ll upload a .zip file tonight for you guys that are having problems.

  5. There is a patch out there that will fix the audio. It is due to an Adobe update.

  6. I’ve run things through the patch already – so everything should be fine for all of you.

  7. [...] I’ll be adding something along the same lines to NSS 2 shortly.  I’ve taken the “day 4” script and juiced it up some to do this.  It also changes some of our focus a bit from home [...]

  8. I go this error when trying to add an article

[function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/eznet/public_html/admin/postarticle.php on line 12

  9. Sounds like your missing the articles folder. I uploaded a fix a few days ago – but all you really need to do is just create a folder called “articles” on your server.

  10. OK, fried hard drive removed, new hard drive installed. Ooops, forgot to backup old hard drive. Oh well, life goes on. So as you see, I’m back to day 4. At least I’m not too far behind. I’ve uploaded the script to my host. Sure hope the install is easier than it looks.

  11. All scripts are easy :)

Just follow the instructions… and usually things go well.

  12. How do you get rss feeds to display?

  13. RC – if you have filled in your values correctly you should be fine. Usually if you aren’t showing rss you haven’t:

1.) Entered your variables correct – fix it through the admin panel.

2.) Added articles. If you don’t do this there isn’t anything to display.

  14. I’ve put my sample site up at www (dot) bedroom apartments for rent (dot) com and I was able to add the articles folder so I can create custom articles, etc.

Everything looks fine, except when I go to click on State Names, it’s looking for a folder “key” which I don’t have. I signed up for other98percent.com and read through the posts and one person had an issue w/ creating the “key” folders and it was a permission problem, but I don’t think that’s my issue as my permissions for all my folder is set to 755. Let me know if you’ve seen this issue before.

  15. Chad,

If you have gone to the admin panel and filled in your variables correctly – and you can’t get to the states – it’s probably because your host doesn’t support mod_rewrite.

There is no “key” folder – it’s done through the .htaccess file.

Usually people haven’t filled in the variables right. You are welcome to give me more info in the 0-98 forum – I’m “admin”.

  16. Hi!

I’m still stuck on day four even though day twelve is sitting in my inbox.

I’ve been trying to put articles up on my site with no luck. I am able to get into the editor and add my content but the site just shows the same error messages.

    What am I doing wrong?
    Barbara

  17. Barbara -

My guess is you are missing the articles folder…. since you didn’t provide me with an error message it’s hard to say for sure.

Be glad to help – although it’s easier through other98percent.com’s forum. Just register for free and come ask :)

  18. The zip file is not their.

  19. Sure is :) – Just tested it.

  20. NOOOOOOOOOOOO says:

Why is my site so damn slow when I use this script, is it because my server / hosting sucks?

  21. I wouldn’t say it ‘sucks’ – it probably doesn’t have a whole lot of processing power though – lot’s of activity going on with these scripts.

On my dedi and/or vps’s there is zero lag. Shared hosting might be a little slow.

  22. NOOOOOOOOOOOO says:

Oh wow thanks for the fast response. I also get a lot of errors when using the script like this one happens when adding an article:

Warning: fopen(../articles/test.html) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/nooooo/public_html/xxxxxxxxx.mobi/admin/postarticle.php on line 12

Warning: fwrite(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/nooooo/public_html/xxxxxxxxxxx.mobi/admin/postarticle.php on line 14

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/nooooo/public_html/xxxxxxxxxxxx.mobi/admin/postarticle.php on line 15
If there are no errors we have put these contents in (../articles/test.html)

I’m code illiterate, Any ideas? Also I know this probably isn’t the place to ask the questions where should I go the 98% forum?

  23. Sounds like your missing the articles folder or it’s permissions aren’t right. If the articles folder isn’t there just create it and set it’s permissions to 755.

the 0-98 forums server (and this one) are undergoing maintenance today so these pages will go up and down — and here is fine for questions on this script as it might help others.

  24. NOOOOOOOOOOOO says:

I made an articles folder in every folder, with an upper case ‘a’ and a lower case ‘A’, and I made them all 755, still gettin’ the same errors :( .

  25. NOOOOOOOOOo says:

Ok so I am looking at the file that the error complains about “postarticle.php”, and the error says there is a problem with lines 12, 14, and 15, and those lines are:

    $fh=fopen($filename, ‘w’);

    fwrite($fh,$somecontent);
    fclose($fh);

Is there something I can change here to get it to work? What is the ‘w’ for?

  26. If you have the articles folder in there – it’s just a permission thing. If 755 isn’t working for your server change to 777.

BTW — you only need one articles folder in the root.

  27. If you are in NSS 2 please use microtargetniches instead. It’s got a number of improvements over this free script and a much nicer skin/theme.
