Day 3 and 2 sort of go together. In day 2 you are setting up your hosting accounts and that does involve buying a couple domains. No sense in wasting those three registrations. SO you either have a choice of getting generic domains, or making sure there is some kind of “plan”.Let’s go with the plan.
For my examples through out this project I was planning on doing something like they did for the “30 day challenge” and just make up a term. But I don’t see any point in working on my end with out a tangible benefit. So for my examples I’m going to be working along the lines of the home improvement niche. That will include ‘geen’ technology, paint, hammers - whatever. As long as I can keep things related I’ll be happy.
Lot’s of things on ebay in relation to all my terms so there are some great third party apps, and some major adverisers at places like commission junction. I also have the option of branching off into some of the smaller dating networks, and even “hip” stuff since the ‘green’ market is rather young. It will be a learning experience for me as well.
For this project you are WAY more than welcome to jump all over the place and do sites on 400000 different topics, however your going to get less juice from all of them. I HIGHLY recommend you stick to a topic or theme. Plenty of ways to niche downwards, to the side, and all over the place and keep things related. It’s going to benefit you if you can interlink between all your sites. After your happy with the work you’ve done on that ‘niche’ you can move onto a new topic.
So for my ‘niche’ as I’ve mentioned I’m going for the “home improvement” concept as the parent topic and a few minutes using Wordze to drum up a good keyword list of sub topics gives me a great place to start. I’ll pick out 50 or 100 or so terms (sorry I’m not telling you mine - I’m sure you can pick through the sites I show you later). It also lets me check out the competition, and see how many links per month they are drumming up. I’m cool if my top competition is growing 1k or less links per month.
For example here is what I know about my competition for “home improvement ideas”:
Beyond the ages of those domains they are all catchable in just a few weeks or months. (HGTV might be tough).
I tend to look for existing domains so that “age” thing doesn’t hold me down for many of my foundation and white hat sites. One of the easiest ways to do that is through http://domainswithbenefits.com or one of the other aftermarket domain places out there. A few extra bucks to register the domain can be worth it if your getting age, links, and pr. Don’t get hung up on that though. Age isn’t everything - and sometimes it’s easier to just grab and go (ie get something done instead of wait).
Time to find your affiliate market - ie how you will make money!
This is one of those things where I almost feel like I shouldn’t even hold your hand. BUT I know many of you are new and think that clickbank is your only option. It isn’t. However you need a site or two that looks good before you can get into many affiliate networks. We are going to get on that tomorrow.
At the finish of day 3 you should have the following:
- A list of keywords compiled with Wordze or the keyword research tool of your choice. There are free alternatives out there - feel free to recommend them in the comments. I use keyword elite and wordze and that’s about it.
- A good idea on what and how to promote it.
- 3 domain names, and 3 separate hosting areas with different IP’s.
- Linking Command Center installed on one of those hosting accounts. (if you aren’t in nss 2 you are just going to have to manually manage your linking 100 percent. It’s a pain in the rear and it’s worth the first months fee in nss 2 just to get it - no pressure, but it’s how I manage all my interlinking for my sites).
- A plan for your “niche” so you can target those keywords.
Day 4 will start for you when your new hosting accounts have propagated and your 3 domain names are accessible and your linking command center is installed. Your fired if you don’t get those things done now.
Your keyword research is going to paralyze you if you have never done it before. Don’t let it. You will do fine, just make sure you have a bunch of terms people are searching for. Some of the features in Wordze really helps you figure out what to nail though - so picking up a day or two even to do some research isn’t a bad idea.

OK, got to see if I can install Linking Command Center.
