30 Days to a Kick Ass Foundation: Day 2 – Hosting
Sunday, February 3rd, 2008I’ve really struggled with what to put up here for Day 2. It’s a complex issue and “TODAY” can pretty much decide the direction you are going to go for the next couple weeks. That direction can either be sitting on your butt doing nothing, finding excuses why you ‘can’t’ do something, or getting something done.
I was really hoping to do this with audio but of course myself (and 3 of 4 of my kids) all have some wacked out ‘wish I was dead’ virus that is making me sound something between a frog and a dead cat (who wants to hear that?).
So – for today, I’m going to let a picture do some talking.

That’s pretty much what we are going to cover here. First off we need some “white hat” sites – sites we can show Google, the affiliate networks, and our Mothers
Then we need foundation sites. Those foundation sites are going to be a mix of sites we host and sites that are hosted by others. Think squiddo, blogger, other folks wordpress mu installs.
Then we are going to buttress that all up with a small legion of auto generated sites, scripts, and promotional methods that have one purpose – to pay for themselves and push link love upwards.
Put that way it sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? Build three types of “things” and interlink them in a pyramid. Simple right?
Not really…. and this is where you are going to come up with your first excuse.
You now have to do this:
1.) Get hosting.
You ‘really’ need some separate hosting accounts both to protect yourself and to give you the (minor) bonus of the different IP addresses. You want your white hat sites on a range of IP addresses, your foundations on another, and your black hats on a third.
Your first excuse is going to be one of the following. You don’t have enough money for three servers, or you don’t have the ‘techie’ knowledge. So let’s get things easy and simple (and as cheap as I can think of to start off).
For your white hat sites you should check out site5′s reseller plans. 15 or so dollars a month and plenty of space and HUGE bandwidth. You are going to have a hard time going over those limits. I’ll ‘opt’ out here and say that my white hat set up is a dedicated… and I stopped recommending site5 a long time ago. I still use them for some things just because they are cheap though. I’d love for someone to let me know if you can set site5 up to run php5 and 4.
You could possibly also have a separate account with them for your foundation sites – although I do recommend a VPS for both your foundations and your black hat sites. Your going to need the flexibility a VPS offers for programming. Don’t let this stop you though – you need hosting. You need separate accounts… and if all you can swing is shared hosting – do it.
For my one VPS account I use a company called Virpus. They set everything up for me and SECURED the set up for me as well. If you google their name and discount you can usually find a good deal. They had some problems for about a month but it seems all cleared up now. I run my cycle sites, and anything that’s REALLY black hat on a vps. It’s cheaper, and I don’t feel bad about dumping them and redirecting when it’s time.
At some point you ARE going to want dedicated servers for these things. But 600 per month compared with a total cost of say 100 or 45 per month the way I listed above is a big difference I’m sure you will agree. When it’s time to dump a IP address or ditch the black hat server for whatever reason it’s a breeze to move from a VPS to a VPS or dedicated server. There are also going to be a few things down the road that I think you ‘must’ have a dedicated or a vps for or it’s just not worth it. I’ll get into that when it’s time. Hopefully you will already be seeing some progress by then.
2.) Build White Hat Sites and Foundations.
Yawn… I HATE making white hat sites. That usually means content and other than here I hate writing. That’s why I hire others to write for me. There are ways to make decent white hat sites with out making your fingers bleed and I’ll be doing my best to help you with this. There are also many ways to ‘game’ existing systems to help you out here. Not all your foundation sites need to be on your servers (and that’s good because of the IP ranges, and costs).
3.) Start Generating BlackHat sites….
I’ll be covering a lot of things here. I’ll be making and giving you the tools to help you here as we go along. Some will be php4 and others php5. I’ll also be using some third party scripts, and tools. A few of them cost money but I’ll only cover the ones that are going to work out for you the best and return that investment fast. The good news is we will ALSO be using some free external (say parasite) methods that you can use on a regular basis to shave some of those costs down. (less cost = more profit).
So – what’s your homework today? Figure out your hosting. Get it set up. DO IT NOW as it takes a little time to get activated. I repeat DO IT NOW.
If your cutting some corners financially a couple accounts on different IP’s of any type will do fine. HOWEVER, the very first thing we are going to suggest you set up is the “linking command center” from NSS 2. It’s going to need a little ram and memory behind it… so I do recommend a stable VPS or dedicated. You could also run it on shared hosting but I have NO clue what that is going to do as I’ve never run a script that intensive on a shared host.
A few rules and suggestions:
- get your domains at namecheap.com (get coupon codes at dncoupon.com). For each reseller or VPS you are going to need a “master” domain. If you can grab some discount .info’s somewhere do it. Those master domains are like the ‘parent’ of anything else you put on that account but you need them to order the hosting.
- Then get your hosting.
- Then install the Linking Command Center. (I’ll make a new video as soon as I can “speak”.)
Skip to day three if your already set up with your hosting or if you need some suggestions on how to pick those domain names.
****** Feel free to leave a shout out here for any ‘good’ hosting companies and why you recommend them. If you leave a affiliate link I’ll nuke it though – notice I haven’t? I’d rather you help others than try and make a buck.
IF YOU ARE SHORT ON FUNDS YOU CAN CERTAINLY START OFF WITH SHARED HOSTING – DON’T THINK BECAUSE I USE A VPS OR DEDICATED YOU CAN’T TWEAK THINGS TO YOUR FINANCIAL NEEDS

I recommend connecthost.net. Cameron gives generous space on his reseller accounts, and he doesn’t oversell, so the space you have, is the space you have! He gives you 50,000 mb space and 120,000 mb bandwidth for $8.99.
I can’t say enough good things for connecthost.net. I’ve just gotten really good service there, too, and you can’t beat his pricing.
Also, he has specials all the time at webhostingtalk.com.
Hope this helps!

I have found Host Monster to be very reliable and responsive to my needs. I have yet to have a complaint about them. And I think they have a lot of room to grow in.

IX Web Hosting (Good Price w/separet IP address) http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.planBusinessPlus
I have been using this service for 6 month and have had no problems. I don’t know about any specific application problems.
The unlimited Pro give you 16 IP address with a unlimited data transfer.
I am not an affiliate of this host. But like anything on the web you should verify all info for your self.

IX Web Hosting is good, and the different IP addresses are very handy, but beware that they do not use standard CPanel, so a lot of things will be different from what is considered “normal”, like the FTP path and the way MySQL databases are referred to etc.

You can check http://www.collocationamerica.com for interesting colocation or dedicated hosting. The man behind the scenes runs a tight ship with tons of class C’s and IP addresses. He may not be the cheapest but you get personal service and he can do a ot of nifty setups. We’ve got 40 domains on his boxes doing quite nicely from web site designs we’ve implemented. Catch me offline if you want some links. No sense wasting valuable space here on my own work when this Digest is cruising along.

Hi,
Nice job in disassembling the empire into straightforward steps, surprised I hadn’t came across here before I clicked your WF sig today!
If you are running cycle sites on a VPS, do you mind sharing the spec of the vps and how many sites/posts run at a time? I’ve got a basic dedi that easily gets maxxed out and am considering whether a vps for the same cash might be a better option.
Gonna read some more here, looks interesting, esp the control centre tools.
Take it easy,
Si (LazyHippy @ WF)

Thanks Si –
I usually go with the mid level VPS’s where offered. I was suggesting virpus but they have had more down time than I can count lately…. with excuse after excuse but still downtime.
Since I end up burning through VPS’s so fast I have a lot of different configs…. and I usually do as much as it can handle and then some.

The tutorial video for the link command center has a lot of audio glitches. Am I missing something or does everyone run into that issue?

I’m uploading the fix now – there was a camastia bug that made audio sound chipmunky… I fixed the videos and apparently I uploaded the bad ones again last week.
You should have working video/audio in about 20 minutes when the upload finishes.

Howdy,
The coupon code site near the end of your post needs an “s” on the end.

How much RAM does the linking command center require? I am looking at different hosting packages and they vary quite a bit.
Also, is it installed on a foundation site or the whitehat site?
Thanks

It can go anywhere lawrence. I see a few folks running it on shared hosting (I don’t recommend) and most end up running on a VPS.
The amount of ram it requires really depends on how many sites your using it on. My copy is running on about 130 domains. There are also about 80 sites on that dedicated server as well with no problems ram wise.

Anyone have experience with hostnine shared hosting reseller? They have 3 locations, UK, USA and Asia, basic reseller costing 20USD or so.
